Le Jazz après shopping with Five Waves

Dieter Vaganée (alto saxophone)
Casimir Ostyn (guitar)
Philippe Van der Niepen (piano)
Christopher Dormaels (drums)
Matthijs Braspenning (double bass)

The jazz quintet “Five Waves” has its origin in the artistic graduation project at the Lemmensinstituut of jazz guitarist Casimir Ostyn, in the year 2013. For this project, he wrote original compositions and performed them with fellow musicians from in- and outside the school. Under the name of « Casimir Ostyn Quintet », they performed for the first time outside school in jazzcafé De Muze in Antwerp. . Recently, the quintet got a new name: Five Waves. The word “wave” has to be understood as a metaphor: there are five separate waves (musicians), each with its own form and characteristics, but in the origin they are all connected as they all consist of water. The repertoire of the band consists for a great deal of original compositions. These compositions – some are contemplative, others are extraverted and expressive- can be classified under the genre of modern jazz. The tradition of the jazz remains close though, as arrangements of jazz standards are also part of the repertoire.
