Round About Five with THE SCOTT DuBOIS QUARTET

This Sunday 6 February from 5pm:

Round About Five with
THE SCOTT DuBOIS QUARTET

Scott DuBois, guitar
Gebhard Ullmann, saxes
Thomas Morgan, doublebass
Kresten Osgood, drums

Guitarist Scott DuBois’ music is described by Jazz Times as “fascinating”, by Cadence Magazine as “exceptional…faultless, a perfect gem” and by AllAboutJazz New York as “captivating music for the meditative thinker”. He has recorded two CDs with David Liebman for the historic Soul Note record label, Monsoon (2004) and Tempest (2006), and two CDs for New York’s Sunnyside Records, Banshees (2008) and Black Hawk Dance (2010), which received a 5-star review in the May 2010 issue of Downbeat Magazine. DuBois was selected as a Semi-Finalist in the 2005 Thelonious Monk Jazz Competition. In addition to being part of the New York City jazz/improvised music scene for the past fifteen years, DuBois has toured extensively with his quartet and other groups performing at jazz/improvised music festivals and clubs throughout North America and Europe. Scott has performed with David Liebman, Chris Potter, Andrew D’Angelo, Bob Mintzer, among many others. New York City’s Downtown Music Gallery wrote that Scott is, “one of the best and most adventurous guitarists in New York City”, and Spain’s largest jazz media source, Tomajazz.com, calls Scott, “one of the best modern jazz guitarists.”
Saxophonist and bass-clarinetist Gebhard Ullmann’s recent CD was chosen by Downbeat Magazine as one of the best CDs of 2008 and after releasing more than 40 CDs as a leader/co-leader, he was chosen as a Rising Star in Downbeat Magazine in 2005. In addition to being a major figure in the Berlin jazz scene, Gebhard has also recorded and performed with Paul Bley, Lee Konitz, Han Bennink, Herb Robertson, Ellery Eskelin, Matt Wilson, Alexander Von Schlippenbach and William Parker, among many others.
Bassist Thomas Morgan is a member of Paul Motian’s band, Steve Coleman’s 5 Elements band, and the John Abercrombie Quartet. Thomas recorded with the John Abercrombie Quartet on the historic ECM record label, which was released in 2009.
Drummer Kresten Osgood has recorded with many great artists including Sam Rivers, Paul Bley, and Dr. Lonnie Smith. He has also toured with Brad Mehldau, Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, William Parker, and Joshua Redman, to just name a few.
Together, the Scott DuBois Quartet performs DuBois’ unique, forward-thinking original compositions with an intense focus on group improvisation, interaction, dynamics, and the unpredictable.

***** (5 stars) “Wonderful, evocative… a profound delight.”
– DownBeat Magazine (Paul de Barros)

“Strumming, plucking and pulling strings as if he were rearranging them on the neck of his instrument…virtuosity…DuBois’ tunes favor the upper end of the scale and intensify air that’s already crackling with seriousness.”
– AllAboutJazz New York (Jeff Stockton)

“Music as fluid and intriguing as a Dalì painting.”
– AllAboutJazz New York (Terrell Holmes)

“(Scott DuBois) has begun to make waves…exploratory yet melodic sensibilities, serious compositional ambitions…cohesive looseness against complex subtleties…”
– The New York Times (Nate Chinen)
